Matthew Jessie (b. 1987) is a photographic artist based in the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee. He received his BFA in Studio Art from East Tennessee State University in 2015 and earned his MFA in Studio Art from Arizona State University in 2020. Rooted in the landscape tradition, his work emerges from solitary treks into remote landscapes, where he seeks to visually interpret his experiences in the land. Currently, he serves as an assistant professor of photography at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tennessee. His work has been exhibited in the United States and internationally.
At times, Jessie creates portraits of family members and others close to him. Their primary purpose is to serve as poetic visual interpretations. They are shaped by memory, the moment in which they were made, and his evolving understanding of and relationship to those pictured. These portraits stand as quiet quintessences of the important people in his life, traces of presence, memory, and connection.
