Matthew Jessie (b. 1987) is a photographic artist born in and currently based in the mountains of Southern Appalachia. His practice engages the landscape tradition through extended fieldwork and solitary treks into remote terrain, where he seeks to translate direct experience into visual form. Jessie received his BFA in Studio Art from East Tennessee State University in 2015 and his MFA in Studio Art from Arizona State University in 2020. He is an Assistant Professor of Photography at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tennessee. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.
At times, Jessie also creates portraits of family members and others close to him. Their primary purpose is to serve as poetic visual interpretations shaped by memory, the moment in which they were made, and his evolving understanding and relationship to those pictured.
